The international fear is that the H1N1 virus could reach pandemic proportions. The National Apartment Association and the National Multi Housing Council produced a White paper that outlines how apartment owners and managers can prepare for a pandemic outbreak of any sort. The Department of Homeland Security has also issued general guidelines for the public in the event of an outbreak. Click on the links below for both reports.

According to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, H1N1 (swine flu) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in April 2009 in the United States. Other countries, including Mexico and Canada, have reported people sick with this new virus. This virus is spreading from person-to-person, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. The CDC Web site has a comprehensive look at the virus and what can be done to stop the spread. Click here for more information.
The American Red Cross has produced a Flu Check List that apartment communities can post in common areas. This flyer helps explain the difference between the H1N1 virus and the typical flu virus. Click here for the flyer.
